A fog- and crash-prone highway through Rockfish Gap will receive a 4.6 million technology upgrade to improve safety and traffic flow. The section of the I-64 corridor over Afton Mountain has a higher-than-average traffic crash rate related to fog or wind, including several large multi-vehicle accidents. The plan is to build an active traffic and safety management system; once completed, according officials, it will include “wall-to-wall” traffic cameras. The cameras will enable surveillance by VDOT’s traffic operations center. The project also includes visibility detection sensors to improve the response and performance of the existing fog light system on Afton. The project will start early next year and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2015.
