Fluoridation has become the topic around water coolers lately… Lynchburg was one of two of the first cities in Virginia to fluoridate its water supply—but the practice in other localities across Central Virginia is mixed. In the Town of Amherst, the controlled practice of adding small amounts of fluoride to the water supply has been long upheld as a simple way to reduce tooth decay but recently the County of Amherst decided against re-establishing it. Bedford County only fluoridates the supply that serves the town of Bedford while its Smith Mountain Lake plant does not. Appomattox County does not fluoridate. According to the CDC, “more than 204 million people in the United States are served by public water supplies containing fluoride, while approximately 100 million Americans are not.
