$128,000 Federal grant given to preserve the Appomattox Court House

(AP) _ The National Park Service has awarded nearly $2.7 million in grants to help preserve Civil War battlefields in Virginia, from Appomattox Court House to Fredericksburg. Announced Thursday in a news release from Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s office, the grants will help preserve nine battlefields in Virginia, where most of the Civil War was fought. The grants include more than $1.2 million for Fredericksburg Battlefield in Spotsylvania County, $357,000 for the First Battle of Kernstown in Frederick County, and $128,000 for the Appomattox Court House Battlefield, among others. The Park Service awards the grants from its American Battlefield Protection Program.
