UPDATE: residents in evacuation area of Commerce & Jefferson Streets allowed to return home

Residents are now allowed to return to their homes in the evacuated area of Commerce and Jefferson Streets.

Anyone who left their vehicle on Jefferson Street, at Depot Grille or in the general evacuation area is asked to return to the area and retrieve their vehicle as soon as possible. They must first check in with the Lynchburg Police Officer on duty at Ninth and Commerce Streets.

Effective now, Wednesday, April 30 and continuing for an unknown duration, the RiverWalk (a section of the James River Heritage Trail) will be closed between Jefferson Street and Amherst County including Jefferson Street, and Percival’s Island Natural Area and parking lot. Trail users can access the Blackwater Creek Bikeway at any point above the Point of Honor Trailhead including the Ed Page Entrance, Hollins Mill Park, and the Kemper Station Trailhead.

The public is asked to obey all signage and use caution while in the vicinity of the accident area.
