Central Virginia Having One of the Largest Fruit Crops

fruitCentral Virginia has had a significant impact in making the Commonwealth one of the largest fruit crops in the nation. According to the Department of Agriculture, Virginia is the sixth-largest in the nation thanks in no small part to the Lynchburg region which is home to about 14 apple orchards. In 2012, the apple crop was valued at $3.1 billion, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service experts say both geography and the states climate coupled with the business trend toward healthy eating and locally supported produce contributes to the success.
