City Council Will Decide On Airport Purchase

The Lynchburg Regional Airport Commission denied Freedom Aviation’s request for an endorsement to purchase its competitor and fixed-base operator Virginia Aviation, a Liberty University subsidiary. The consolidation has been considered by some as a monopoly; and the commission is recommending that Lynchburg City Council disapprove the purchase, citing the lack of benefits to the city as a whole. Over the past 15 years, City Council has put regulations in place to maintain competition. Council members are expected to vote on the matter during a hearing is set for July 24.
