CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) _ Police blocked off roads and were searching for clues in an area where they found remains that could be missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham. The 18-year-old Graham hasn’t been seen since Sept. 13 after a night out with friends. The remains were found Saturday about 12 miles from campus. The man Graham was last seen with, 32-year-old Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., has been charged with abduction with intent to defile Graham. He’s being held in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 4. It’s not clear how long it will take authorities to identify the remains they discovered over the weekend.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) _ Authorities investigating the disappearance of a University of Virginia student are searching a rural area where human remains were discovered. Investigators also interviewed residents in the area Sunday, and forensic teams combed the sides of a road for several miles past the site. It was not immediately known what they were looking for. Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo told a news conference on Saturday that human remains were found on an abandoned property in southern Albemarle County, south of Charlottesville. He said authorities have not yet confirmed they are those of University of Virginia sophomore Hannah Graham, but have notified Grahams’ parents of the discovery. The area is heavily wooded and sparsely populated. Graham disappeared on Sept. 13. Jesse Leroy Matthew has been charged with abduction with intent to defile Graham.

Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo told a news conference Saturday that a set of remains was found on an abandoned property in southern Albemarle County. He said authorities have not yet confirmed they are those of UVa. sophomore Hannah Graham, but have notified Graham’s parents of the discovery. Graham disappeared on Sept. 13. Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., 32, has been charged with abduction with intent to defile Graham. The remains found Saturday were in the same region where police found the body of 20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington three months after she vanished in 2009.

Police Chief Timothy Longo and others told a news conference Saturday afternoon further forensic tests would be conducted to confirm that the remains are those of Hannah Graham. Thousands of volunteers had searched for the 18-year-old Graham in the weeks since her disappearance. Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., 32, has been charged with abduction with intent to defile Graham. Virginia State Police have said Matthew’s arrest provided a “forensic link” to the 2009 unsolved murder of Morgan Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech who also went missing from Charlottesville after a Metallica concert at UVa.’s John Paul Jones Arena.
