Court Clerks Waiting to See About Granting Marriage Licenses

city lynchburg logoCourt clerks in Lynchburg and surrounding counties are waiting to see whether or not they can begin to grant marriage licenses to two men or two women. Couples will be able to marry by the end of the week, unless the Supreme Court stays the mandate, or formal judgment. According to the Virginia Department of Health, currently, the commonwealth prohibits marriages between ancestors or descendants of the same bloodline, people between 16 and 18 years old who do not have parental consent; people who are mentally incapacitated and couples of the same sex. Unless the court intervenes, same-sex marriages could begin Thursday. The state also would need to start recognizing out-of-state gay marriages.
