It’s A No Go for Rt. 29 Bypass Plans

The U.S. 29 bypass outside of Charlottesville won’t receive federal-government approval. Before Albemarle County supervisors could decide whether to block the bypass, on Wednesday, the feds halted the project in its tracks calling the project an outdated approach to relieving congestion. The Federal Highway Administration issued recommendations to the Department of Transportation urging officials to consider other options. Media outlets report, the document stopped short of killing the project, the FHWA suggested the best means for moving forward on a project would be a supplemental environmental impact statement and called for a reassessment of the project’s purpose and needs; giving project planners 30 days to produce an alternative.
