Officials Address Coal Ash Concerns

A delegation of EPA emergency response personnel, regulatory agents and health officials last week answered questions regarding coal ash from residents who live throughout the Dan River Basin. The panel informed South Boston residents wanting assurances that their drinking water was safe from elevated levels of contaminants that drinking water from the Dan River was safe; A Duke Energy representative told customers that they would not be liable for cleanup costs associated with the spill. Officials say, removing the ash may involve dredging, using a small shovel or even installing a passive system in the river to collect the ash. No time frame has been confirmed.
