The crash occurred in the northbound lanes at the 227 mile marker. According to witnesses, two vehicles were racing each other through northbound traffic on Interstate 81 in excess of 100 mph. At one point, a Nissan passed traffic on the right shoulder. As it tried to merge back into the northbound travel lane, the driver lost control. The vehicle spun across I-81 and ran off the left side of the interstate into the median, went up an embankment and overturned multiple times. The Nissan driver, Jeffery A. Stewart, 51, of Amherst, Va., was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. The other vehicle, only described as a black sedan, involved the racing continued on I-81. It was discovered later Monday evening that the Nissan, as it spun across the travel lanes, did make contact with another vehicle that was traveling north on I-81. That vehicle suffered minor damage and the driver was not injured.
