The Hows & Whys to Cancel School

January was a challenging month for local schools when deciding whether to close, delay or remain open. With record breaking low temperatures, wind chills reaching sub-zero values, a couple of clipper systems bring some snow and a bit of ice too, school districts across the region spent much of the month wondering what to do. Closing or delaying schools is a multifaceted decision. School officials use “various sources” to track predicted storms and appraise inclement weather before making a decision whether to delay or cancel school. When inclement weather is forecasted, each division transportation supervisor will monitor until 5 a.m. the day of, in order to make a decision with the final signed off by Superintendent before 6 a.m. Officials say, as a means to keep everyone safe, it is best to err on the side of caution.
