U.Va. head: School to be national leader on campus safety

UVA-LogoUniversity of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan says her university will become a national leader on improving campus safety. Sullivan made the remarks Friday during an address to the campus community. The university was thrust into the national spotlight in recent months after one of its students was abducted and killed and after Rolling Stone magazine published a story that described a culture of sexual violence at the school. Sullivan says this past semester was one of the most traumatic in the school’s history. While much of the Rolling Stone article was discredited, Sullivan says the national spotlight gave the university an opportunity to lead. Sullivan says the university is undergoing a thorough review of its campus culture and is considering creating an Institute for Research on Violence, Inequality and Power.
