Zinc Levels At Appomattox Treatment Plant Are Under Control

According to the Appomattox Town Manager, the town is no longer under a consent order from the Department of Environmental Quality concerning high zinc levels in the water. The town was placed under the order 10 years ago. Staff members began using limestone at the waste water treatment plant to reduce the levels. Appomattox’s zinc content has come in below the state-set level of 53 for 18 consecutive months, causing the DEQ to remove the order. The waste water management staff was recognized on Monday at the Appomattox Town Council meeting for being able to reduce and maintain the low levels at a minimal cost. According to the News & Advance, the town spends $10,000 annually to add the limestone.
