The New York City-bound Amtrak Crescent with 207 passengers and 11 crew members aboard went off the tracks near Spartanburg, South Carolina early Monday morning. Several cars of the train, which passes through Lynchburg, derailed just after midnight. Amtrak says the train remained upright on the tracks and there were no serious injuries. According to Amtrak officials, passengers were taken off the disabled cars and put aboard buses for stops in North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C., No word on the cause of the derailment or if any local passengers were on board.
