Lynchburg PoliceFrom Lynchburg City Police: UPDATE 1/12/2016: The patient involved in this incident is identified as Jonathan Warner, age 28 of Amherst. An updated status on his condition is not currently available. Based on the information available at this time, investigative findings indicate that Warner attacked Security Officer Wes Gillespie while in the Dillard Building. This building is located on Centra’s Lynchburg General Hospital property, in a separate facility adjacent to the Emergency Department. During the struggle, Warner was able to disarm Gillespie of his Taser, which Warner discharged during the altercation. Warner also physically assaulted Gillespie and another employee. At the time of the shooting, Warner was armed with the Taser. The Lynchburg Police Department is sharing all investigative information with the Lynchburg Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney. Once the investigation is complete, the Commonwealth’s Attorney will render a written opinion. Centra is cooperating with this investigation as it continues.

EARLIER: On January 11, 2016, at approximately 0443 hours officers with the Lynchburg Police Department responded to 1901 Tate Springs Road (Centra – Lynchburg General Hospital) to investigate a shooting that occurred at this location. Preliminary investigation indicates that shots were fired by a Centra security officer during a physical altercation with an adult male patient. The patient is currently listed in critical condition. The involved security officer sustained minor injuries during the altercation. This incident is still in the preliminary stages of an active and ongoing investigation. No further information is being released at this time.
