From Lynchburg Police: On November 19, 2015 at approximately 9:30PM, officers with the Lynchburg Police Department responded to the Lynchburg General Hospital at the request of the medical staff. They reported that 45 year old Robert Eugene Thornton of Lynchburg was transported to the hospital earlier in the day. Serious injuries to Thornton were discovered that appeared to have been the result of an assault. Detectives with the Lynchburg Police Department opened an investigation into the matter at that time. During his stay at the hospital, his condition continued to deteriorate. On January 9, 2016, Thornton died due to medical complications stemming from his original injuries. An autopsy was completed on January 11. On January 12, the medical examiner determined that Thornton’s death was a homicide. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
