State police say a woman was killed and two other people injured in a two -vehicle crash in Amherst County last Friday afternoon.   It happened on Route 29 Business/South Amherst Highway. Police say a car driven by 65-year-old Larry Fitch of Washington DC was headed west on North Coolwell Road when it ran a stop sign and hit a vehicle that was headed south on 29.    A passenger in Fitch’s car, 62-year-old Carlene V. Fitch, 62, of Madison Heights, Va., died at the scene.  Larry Fitch was seriously injured and is charged with DUI-related involuntary manslaughter.  The other car’s driver, 65-year-old Glen N. Hawes of Lynchburg was also seriously injured.

Virginia State Police Trooper N. Hollandsworth is investigating a two -vehicle crash in Amherst County. The crash occurred Oct. 29, 2021 at 12:04 p.m. on Route 29 Business/South Amherst Highway at Route 663/North Coolwell Road.

A 2004 Honda Odyssey was westbound on North Coolwell Road. The vehicle failed to stop for the posted stop sign and continued across Route 29 Business. The Honda pulled into the path of a 2019 Ford Econoline 350 that was traveling south on Route 29 Business. The Ford was unable to avoid the Honda and struck it in the passenger side. The impact of the crash forced both vehicles off the road and into a ditch. The Honda also struck a stop sign post before coming to rest in the ditch.

The driver of the Odyssey, Larry Fitch, 65, of Washington, D.C., was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt. He was arrested for DUI-related involuntary manslaughter.

A passenger in the Odyssey, Charlene V. Fitch, 62, of Madison Heights, Va., died at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt. 

The driver of the Ford, Glen N. Hawes, 65, of Lynchburg, Va., was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt. 

The crash remains under investigation.
