Measure to Teach Children Self-Protection Moves Forward

A modified defense-from-predators bill gives “would-be-victims” a fighting chance. The House of Delegates Education Committee on Monday approved a bill in support of children receiving eight hours of instruction each year on how to avoid, resist and escape threats from physical, sexual and online origins. The classes will be part of the physical education course; the measure allows for additional funding to cover the cost of training teachers statewide for the defense curriculum. The money would come from a $15 fee added to criminal convictions in Virginia courts. The measure would also include funding for two task forces and salary support for other law enforcement agencies that work with the units. The bill now goes before the Appropriations Committee.
