The remains of a 35 year old military crash site along the Appalachian Trail is thought to have been located…again! Two Navy airmen lost their lives On August 29, 1979, when a the plane they were in struck a mountain near the three-county border of Amherst, Nelson and Rockbridge counties. The plane was discovered the day after the accident; at which time, the military remove pieces of the plane that provided identification, such as serial numbers. Sources say the only pieces of the A-6 Intruder left on the mountain are vestiges of the wings, fuselage and various pieces belonging to the engine and landing gear.
