Legislation that would grant federal recognition of the Monacan Indian Nation of Amherst County has moved on to the full U.S. Senate. According to the New Era Progress, on Wednesday, the Indian Affairs Committee forwarded the tribal recognition bill, which names five other Virginia Indian tribes. The tribes have recognition from the state but not from the federal government. If passed, it would allow the tribes to join more than 500 other tribes across the county to receive benefits, social services and protections provided through various federal agencies.
