Museum Groups Give “Thumbs Down” On Randolph College’s Choice to Sell Painting

Two national arts groups have criticized Randolph College for selling George Bellows’ “Men of the Docks” and using the funds to bolster the college’s endowment. The Association of Academic Museums and Galleries and American Association of Museum Directors have publicly condemned the sale since it was first proposed in 2007. Randolph College sold the piece by the famous American painter this month to the National Gallery in London for $25.5 million.
