Negotiations are underway with a consulting firm for a contract and construction plan to replace the bridge over the Staunton River in Campbell County. The two-lane bridge that links Altavista and Hurt was built in 1929; it has been classified by the highway department as a “structurally deficient.” Although it is safe for cars and trucks, the weight limits have already been reduced by VDOT. According to the Altavista Journal, the plan is to replace it in its existing location. The bridge will be closed and traffic detoured toward U.S. 29 during construction, with a detour in place for up to two years. A schedule for the project hasn’t been developed, therefore the start date has not been determined, but officials anticipate completion sometime in 2019.
