The Amherst County School Board, last week announced a change in the form that parents must sign to request a religious exemption. Though Parents of homeschoolers are required to, currently those using the clause do not have to provide yearly updates on the child’s progress to the school division. School officials say there’s no follow up in regards to if the student is receiving an education. But, State law suggests that a child be consulted before being removed from school under the religious exemption clause. Now the school division will require that a child 10 years of age or older co-sign with his or her parents. The form will take effect for the upcoming school year.
