The addition of a new medical facility in the Town of Amherst could help mitigate a shortage of health care professionals in the county. Amherst is federally recognized as medically underserved and since 2012, the community has been deemed low income. In June, Centra Health announced plans to build a $9 million ambulatory-care facility behind the Ambriar shopping center. The facility, which will also serve as a satellite office for patients in Blue Ridge, is expected to open in 2016.
