The Nelson County communication tower ordinance has been amended. Earlier this month, the Board of Supervisors approved a repeal of almost all sections of the previous ordinance, Article 20 in the zoning code, and replaced them with new language that will reduce the requirements for a tower’s minimum setback from Virginia Scenic Byways and the Blue Ridge Parkway and serve as a comprehensive overhaul of previous tower classifications. Under the previous ordinance, communication towers were required to be located at least one air mile from scenic byways and the Parkway. The new ordinance reduced that requirement to 125 feet for scenic byways and 1,320 feet for the Parkway and the Appalachian Trail.
