Appomattox County officials have adopted an ordinance requiring anyone convicted of manufacturing methamphetamine to pay for the cleanup. The Sheriff’s Department requested the ordinance; and supervisors passed the measure following a public hearing on Monday. According to the code, amounts charged to felons cannot exceed the actual cost associated with meth lab cleanup, removal or repair of the affected property or the costs of replacing personal protective equipment. Bedford County and Lynchburg have similar ordinances. Authorities say it is difficult to enforce collection of the restitution since the responsible party is incarcerated.
