A House Appropriations Committee’s proposal to compensate sterilization victims was one of the many things blocked from the state budget last week. Virginia for decades had a policy of sterilizing people judged to be genetically inferior. Many of the procedures in the now-discredited eugenics program were performed at the CentralVirginiaTrainingCenter in Madison Heights up until the 1970’s. Media outlets report, state officials cite revenue shortfall for the delay in compensation.
