Notice of Violation Served To CSX

CSX has been served with a Notice of Violation by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality related to the April 30 train derailment in downtown Lynchburg. The News & Advance reports, the Notice of Violation cites regulations prohibiting the discharge of oil into state waters, lands or storm drain systems. Since the spill and fire, CSX has implemented a comprehensive environmental assessment, monitoring and remediation plan; and has arranged a meeting with DEQ representatives. The cause of the incident remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board; it is expected to take up to a year.
