amherst county logoThe Old Dominion Job Corps has been building skills for career minded individuals for 5 decades. The Amherst County center celebrated the program’s 50 years last week. In 1964, the Economic Opportunity Act bill created a number of national programs, including Job Corps, which is a vocational-training program for low-income teenagers and young adults. Old Dominion provides training in a range of career; students also learn the soft skills necessary to keep and hold a job. In addition to training in their chosen trades, Job Corps students are expected to donate time as volunteers to various non-profits. A general educational development certificate can also be earned, for those individuals who did not complete high school. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor.
