With the most heavily-traveled holiday week upon us, the Virginia State Police are strongly encouraging motorists to focus on safe driving behaviors. Trooper patrols and traffic enforcement efforts have been increased locally and regionally through the Combined Accident Reduction Effort program. Operation C.A.R.E. is a state-sponsored, national program designed to reduce crashes, fatalities and injuries caused by speeding, impaired driving and failure to use occupant restraints. Last year, 14 individuals died in 13 traffic crashes on Virginia’s highways during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend – the highest number of fatal crashes since 2009 when 16 motorists lost their lives. Motorists can expect to see a greater number of troopers across the state through Sunday.
