Altavista Town Council has approved reinforcing a berm around a contaminated waste water treatment pond to prevent stormwater from running into it. The pond contains PCBs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently said the town does not have to remove the PCBs as long as the toxins stayed in the pond. If there is a flood, and the overflow mixes with other bodies of water, the town would be responsible. Media outlets report, staff will hold a work session on the matter in two months regarding the ongoing studies at the pond.
