UPDATE:

State Police say a Rustburg man was killed after being hit by an SUV while crossing Village Highway just west of Rails End Lane. It happened late Friday afternoon. Police say 67-year-old Leonard R. Morton was crossing outside of a crosswalk and not wearing any reflective clothing when he was hit. He died at the hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet, John T. Wright, III, 45, of Gladys, Va., was uninjured in the crash. 

Police have also released the name of a Gladys man who died early Friday morning after being hit by a tractor trailer on Route 501. Police say 34-year-old Ryan H. Vassar was walking with traffic and not wearing any reflective clothing and the truck couldn’t avoid him. He died at the scene. 

EARLIER:

State Police say one person is dead after being hit by a tractor trailer in Campbell County around 1:30 this morning.   Police say the truck was traveling on Brookneal Highway, route 501, when it encountered a pedestrian in the travel lane near Volunteer Rd. The tractor-trailer was unable to avoid striking the male pedestrian, who died at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
