The new owner of the Phelps Road School in Madison Heights is optimistic that the facility will undergo a lasting renovation…despite the looming threat of the wrecking ball. The former owner of the property failed to maintenance it; and in June 2013, the county condemned the school. In January, the Amherst County Board of Supervisors filed suit for the building’s demolition; but last month, a motion by the new owner for a continuance was granted…A new hearing is set for Aug. 22. Provided the courts forego the county’s request for demolition, there are already several options being considered for the reuse of the main two-story structure.
