va_landmarksLynchburg’s historic Pierce Street district has earned a place on the register of state landmarks. Best known for being home to Harlem Renaissance-era poet Anne Spencer and tennis coaching great Robert Walter “Whirlwind” Johnson; Pierce Street was added just this month. It encompasses a two-block span, and incorporates properties on neighboring Fillmore and Buchanan streets. Two historical markers were approved by the state earlier this year and organizers hope to unveil them at the annual Pierce Street Harlem Renaissance Festival in September.
