Plans to rehabilitate a Nelson County Dam in an effort to develop a new hydroelectric plant on the site are moving forward. Last week, the Nelson County Planning Commission approved the proposed Walker Mill Dam Rehabilitation project in Schuyler. This week, the County’s Planning & Zoning Department received a major site plan from the project’s land surveyor and engineer. Facilitators are now in the process of obtaining a state permit issued jointly by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Corps of Engineers and Marine Resources Commission. Officials say the project has been in the works since last summer; it likely will be a year and a half or more before the dam is complete.
