Amherst-CountyThe possible theft of copper rods may have caused a Sunday afternoon fire that forced a section of U.S. 29 to shut down temporarily in Amherst County. According to the director of Amherst County Public Safety, the metal pole near the intersection of Rt. 29 and Izaak Walton Road, acted as a cell phone tower for AT&T and held “high voltage” lines for Appalachian Power. Authorities say while investigating the cause of the fire, it was discovered that the copper rods were missing. The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft.
