A motion to pass a prayer ordinance in the Town of Amherst won’t be moving forward. A measure to formalize a policy that would govern prayer invocations during Town Council meetings has been dropped. The Supreme Court ruled this year that government boards may have sectarian prayer invocations provided they do not exclude certain faiths nor require the public to participate. In November, the Town Council was presented with a draft prayer policy that adhered to the Supreme Court’s decision by allowing residents to exercise their free speech with a prayer. According to the News & Advance, it takes the liability off of the town.
