New bids will be sought for the first phase of the Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge railroad tunnel restoration project. The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded nearly 750-thousand dollars for Nelson and Augusta counties. The master plan calls for two trailheads from both sides of Afton Mountain, and (ultimately) connecting adjacent recreational assets such as the Parkway. But, Officials say the original bids exceeded funding; and the project will be rebid later this month. The tunnel was built in the 1850s and ended rail car use in 1944.
