Amherst County is looking to recoup financial losses through the treasurer’s office. Former Treasurer, Evelyn Martin pleading guilty in January to embezzlement and money laundering. Sources say, once the criminal case has concluded, a reimbursement court proceeding will begin in an attempting to recover the lost funds. Virginia law requires that constitutional officers, such as treasurers, be bonded; if a locality experiences a financial loss, it may file a claim with the Division of Risk Management– but only after all pending court cases have concluded so that restitution, if-court ordered, can be subtracted from the loss. Martin will be sentencing in April.
