After decades of being considered a “high-growth” locality, the population growth in Amherst County has stalled. Since the 1950s, the population of Amherst County increased each decade by more than 10 percent. By the 1980s the population decreased slightly by nearly 2 percent, before making an 11 percent gain the ensuing decade. But, according to estimates recently released by the University of Virginia, the County has only grown by .4 percent from the 2010 census to July 2013. The New Era progress reports, while population growth seems stagnant, the number of construction permits for new single-family homes is on the rise. According to the article, the department of planning and zoning issued 55 permits last year.
