Clean up efforts at Smith Mountain Lake this year could prove to be a job for extra volunteers. Officials say the lake is now up to full pond, which means more rubble, rubbish and waste. Officials say there is a large flotilla of debris—both castoffs from man and natural debris washing in from the Roanoke and Blackwater rivers. Smith Mountain Lake encompasses over 40 miles, holds 20,000 acres of water, and is surrounded by 500 miles of shoreline. Full pond is 795 feet above sea level. Take Pride cleanup committee members say more volunteers may be needed for the annual cleanup in order to prepare the waterway for boating season.
