Bedford County officials yesterday reviewed proposed zoning ordinance changes. One of the ordinances discussed was a proposal to rescind requirements on short-term rentals, primarily affecting those in the Smith Mountain Lake area where the more than 300 permits were issued. The ordinance requires anyone wanting to rent short term — less than 30 days — reapply for a permit every three years. To get that permit, the owner must clean out the septic tank or have it inspected. Also the home must have a working fire extinguisher and smoke detector to gain the permit. The board instructed the County Director of Community Development to adjust administrative requirements that the permits be renewed every three years. According to sources, the County’s Planning Commission has already voted to leave the ordinance in tact.
