Amherst CountyApparently far too many drivers failed to “beware a work zone” on their way through Amherst County last year. The Amherst County Sheriff’s office says excessive speeding in work zones was the number-one infraction that motorists made during a 12-month period ending Oct. 31. While multiple classes of speeding violations, such as speeding in a residential or business district, composed the majority of infractions, the next largest source of warrants was failure to obey highway signs. VDOT officials say speed limits are determined by engineering studies that evaluate factors such as geography, traffic volume, shoulder width and the number of crashes on a roadway.
