Flu activity remains widespread in Virginia, according to Virginia Department of Health surveillance data. The most recent state flu report, which covers the week ended Jan. 11, shows between 3 and 4½ percent of patient visits to urgent care centers and emergency rooms were for flu-like illness. There has been one reported pediatric death, in Northern Virginia—the state doesn’t report adult flu-related deaths. Local medical offices say what they are seeing is typical for this time of year. But state Health officials say the flu seems to be affecting the young to middle-aged adult group particularly hard this season.
