The Pittsylvania County Planning Commission is deadlocked on a proposed campground at Smith Mountain Lake. Smith Mountain Dock and Lodge wants to rezone 8.82 acres in three parcels. The lake property just off Smith Mountain Road is zoned residential. Sources say the new owners want to replace a former mobile home park with a campground. The case now goes to supervisors, who will hold another public hearing Tuesday, March 18, before making a final decision. According to the Smith Mountain Eagle, even if supervisors rezone the land, the owners will have to have a special-use permit from the board of zoning appeals for a campground.
