A police chase today that started in Lynchburg and ended in Bedford County led to the arrest of a man wanted for several Lynchburg vehicle break-ins. When it ended, Clifton Irving was taken into custody. Police say he will be charged with forcibly entering three vehicles in late August and stealing items from them. The pursuit briefly led to some schools in Lynchburg and Forest to go into precautionary lockdown mode.

NEWS RELEASE: The Lynchburg Police Department has a suspect in custody after a vehicle pursuit through the city of Lynchburg and Bedford County.

On September 24, 2019 at 11:20 a.m., officers located the suspect vehicle of wanted subject Clifton Lamont Irving and attempted a vehicle stop near Caroline Street and Smyth Street. Irving fled from police and led them on a vehicle chase through the city and into Bedford County. He eventually left his vehicle and fled on foot in the 2500-block of Hooper Road. Officers and Bedford County Sheriff’s Office deputies tracked Irving down and took him into custody in Ivy Creek behind Riley Run Road at 12:28 p.m.
Irving also led officers on a vehicle pursuit through the city earlier this morning that officers had to abandon for safety reasons. He is charged with felony eluding police, destruction of property, and three counts of unlawfully entering a vehicle. Additional charges are pending.
The Lynchburg Police Department wants to thank the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, and local citizens for their invaluable assistance in locating and arresting this suspect.

PREVIOUS: The Lynchburg Police Department is searching for a suspect in a recent series of larcenies from vehicles and destruction of property. Clifton Lamont Irving is wanted for destruction of property and three counts of unlawfully entering a vehicle in connection with three incidents in late August where car windows were smashed. Lamont may be driving a light blue-green Buick LeSabre bearing a Virginia license plate UUV-8291.   This is an ongoing investigation. Any additional information will be released as an update to this news release.
