The choice to plant trees in order to solve PCB problems in Altavista, looks to be taking root. Faced with levels well above the federal limits since 2002; and charged by the state to reduce those contaminants to a safer level in the Town’s wastewater treatment pond’s sediment, officials decided to try an experimental “green” method of tree planting. A recently released preliminary report shows its working; the PCB levels are decreasing. Nearly 170 trees have been planted on five plots since the treatment began in 2012. In that time, the levels have fallen below the state’s acceptable limit of 50 parts per million.
