An Appomattox County man is the first $100,000 winner in the Virginia Lottery’s new $1 million Money Ball game. Curtis Mays of Concord received a free ticket during the “Money Ball Monday” promotion last Monday, when he bought some other lottery tickets. Appomattox County man is first $100,000 winner in $1,000,000 Money Ball

He wins with a free ticket he received on “Money Ball Monday”

Curtis Mays wasn’t planning to play Virginia’s newest game, $1,000,000 Money Ball. But the Concord man just happened to buy some other Virginia Lottery tickets during the “Money Ball Monday” promotion on September 15. He received a free $1,000,000 Money Ball ticket for the first-ever drawing on September 17.

That free ticket just happened to match all five winning numbers, 10-13-16-17-20, to win $100,000.

“I didn’t believe it,” the electrician’s apprentice said as he claimed his prize. “I tried to keep calm.”

The Gold Million Dollar Money Ball did not come up in that drawing. If it had, the top prize would have increased to $1 million.

Mr. Mays is the first person to win the $100,000 prize in Virginia’s newest game. Two other tickets also matched five numbers to win $100,000. Those tickets, which were bought in Danville and Newport News, have not yet been claimed.

The new game from the Virginia Lottery offers some of the best odds of becoming a millionaire of any current jackpot game. The game is played exclusively in Virginia. Tickets went on sale Sunday.

Mr. Mays received the free ticket at Sheetz, 2630 Lakeside Drive in Lynchburg.

$1,000,000 Money Ball tickets are available at all Virginia Lottery retailers for $2 each. Drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11:00 and streamed live at www.valottery.com. The odds of winning the $1 million prize are 1 in 2,337,350.
