The Amherst County Board of Supervisors last week considered volunteer firefighter incentives. A study performed by the Virginia Fire Services Board was presented at a December board meeting encouraged the consideration of incentives as a means to boost the number of volunteer emergency personnel. Several proposed incentive have been suggested, including volunteer pay for each response call made—or a recommended tax reduction for volunteers and extension of the county’s ambulance transport insurance program. The Emergency Services Council presented information to the board that determined a $500 bonus for 128 active volunteers would be the best option. Supervisors were scheduled to hold a work session this morning—there has been no word on whether the option was adopted.
